Street Tires or Off Road Tires
« on: May 16, 2018, 01:56:52 AM »
It's that time to replace the stock street tires on my 2015 Versys 1000, wondering if anyone is running an off road tire? Looking to hit a few back roads near my house that are not paved.

:185:   along to this excellent forum, there's plenty of great advice, help and just a touch of banter on here

Unfortunately I cannot help you with off road tyre choice, but I hope someone will be along to offer you some  advice   :002:

Welcome, Korg.  :031:

Someone here will have experience with dual purpose tires, but most of us stick to street skins.

The Versys is a street bike. You can take any bike off road if you want to and dual sport or off-road tyres will help, but they won't make it a good off road bike.

Guys, he's not talking about going off road, just unpaved roads. The US has many graded unpaved roads, fire trails etc, something like a Avon Trailrider could be an option.

Right, there are gradations of tread coarseness best suited for various surfaces.

My V does fine on reasonably maintained dirt and gravel roads on the OEM T30s; I just apply loose surface riding technique. A more dual purpose tread would be better. But I will not use the bike for a stump jumper. I don't want to beat up the suspension and damage the cast wheels. The Versys natural home is pavement.

When my son first saw my V1K he said, "Jeez, dad, that looks like a giant dirt bike!"

I said oh no, son, looks are deceiving. This is a touring bike that's also great around town and on the 2 lane country blacktops. It was never intended for logs boulders and sand traps.
