Which tour next year?
« on: May 19, 2018, 07:30:37 PM »
We have two tours in mind for next year. The first is a variant on the tour we’d planned three years ago before Ruth had a slight stroke a month before we were due to leave. It would be, roughly, Venlo, Hanover*, Berlin, the Hartz mountains to ride the steam-powered rack trains and Lindlar, near Cologne, to visit an old German friend who keeps a hotel there.

The other would be a tour of Ireland, starting and finishing at Belfast. I haven’t researched it yet but we’re thinking along the lines of doing a circuit along the coastline. We’ve never been to NI and have only been to the Republic once, almost 25 years ago, for an FIM Motocamp at Killarney, after which we had stops at Castletownbere, Blarney and Dublin. Other than that, the island is a blank.

It isn’t a matter of choosing one or the other. We’ll do both over the next couple of years. I’d love to hear suggestions of must-see sites - the Titanic exhibition and the Causeway are automatic. We assume there must be bus tours of Belfast?

*One of my distant Suffolk relatives married a Hanoverian soldier in 1812 and moved with him to Verde an der Aller after the Napoleonic Wars were over. I know his name but little else and I’m told there may be records in museums in Hanover that might fill in some gaps.

Keith, there is much to see in Northern Ireland,  too much to detail  now, but I will gladly research for you...oh BTW there are bus tours in Belfast    :002:

Hi Keith, I’ve just arrived home after crossing on the Hook of Holland - Harwich overnight ferry. I came from the area in Germany that you are considering and I would say “do it”! I have been around that area several times and I just love it.
Titty bars aren't bad if you enjoy being sexually aroused without an outlet. Oh, and they're also convenient if you're in the mood for paying double the normal price for a drink. If I'm in the mood to be treated poorly while giving up large amounts of cash, I visit a BMW dealership

Harwich usually doesn’t register for us. We have friends in Kent who’ll let us stay with them and it’s only 45 minutes to the Chunnel. We’ll check Harwich-Hook out now, though.

I agree with Longdog, even took his advice on hotels last time and the whole area is gorgeous.

My word, Paul! That looks the business. Will give this a once-over after we get home.
