Winter is approaching....suggestions
« on: October 02, 2018, 02:52:16 PM »
I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about 'winterising' a bike, so if you have any suggestions that may help others, why not post them here  :002:

I keep my bike 'available' all year round, just in case I get chance to ride out during the winter months when many bikers have their bikes on SORN.

If you plan to lay your bike up what steps do you take to keep it comfortable over the winter months

I cover my bike in ACF 50. All over the plated parts and electrics. i even coat the chain with a mixture of ACF50 and EP90 oil. Keeps it in good shape. I have the luxury of not needing to ride my bike for comuting, so I only ride when the weather is above about 5 degrees to avoid ice.

Cheers,

Dave

Find a well-maintained jet wash at a local garage. Mine has pay-per-time so no need to go into the shop and speak to the staff. Depending on the jet-wash model and assuming it has not run out or is faulty, it may have a "hot wax" setting that works. So I clean the bike first then ride there and let it cool down enough. Fill up with the posh expensive unleaded while I'm there too - this help the bike start more easily after a lay-up. Then to the jet wash for a quick rinse followed by a thorough going over with the hot wax spray, especially in the underneath parts, then a final rinse-off. Always being careful with the jet wash not to force water into where it shouldn't go.
A good coating of whatever the "wax" is should help protect all the shiny bits  :028:

Electric jacket. Worth it's weight in brass washers.

Ride it. Like any vehicle, it's a depreciating asset. Might as well enjoy devaluing it. Wash it, but then go and get it dirty again.
Mine's 5 years old now, needs some talc on the pannier frames and back end, but nothing major. It's not for looking at😁

TLC, not talc. Think that might be a bit odd.
