Versys 1000 v Vstrom 1000
« on: October 30, 2018, 09:26:04 PM »
First newbie question. I've had a 'search' of the forum, and am wondering if anyone has direct comparisons of the newer Versys/Vstrom
I guess most here will say the Versys is better, but I'm looking for a bit more than that.
I had an original Vstrom 1000 and loved it but the latest model looks a bit more minimalistic and the Versys more of a complete bike.
I know the engines are totally different but would like some ideas about day to day use and touring ability between the two.

I have had the latest model V Strom 1000, and have had a V I and and currently one of my bikes is a V II . The V Strom is a pretty decent bike for the money but for me it lacked a decent top end. It ran out of go at higher speeds and was a bit breathless for a 1000. For me save your wedge and go for the 650 Strom , or if you fancy/insist on  a 1000 both Versys 1000's are better bikes than the 1000 V strom. I think Suzuki missed a trick with the revamped 1000 Strom engine, should have had similar punchto the Kwak and it would have been stiffer competion.

Motorcycle.com did a Big Bore Adventure Touring Shoot Out in 2018 with Strom, amongst others and an Ultimate Sports Aventure Shoot Out 2015 with the V1K 2nd Gen.

Both available on YouTube and as a written review at Motorcycle.com. unfortunately both reviews are a bit advertorial with foregone "winners' but a fair amount of info.

It is interesting reading the posted comments on both sets of media as much as the articles themselves.

If i was choosing between  these two bikes , i would choose based on what i would be using them for ..they are quite different in reality ..make no mistake the Versys 1000 is a Sport touring bike , the Vstrom 1000 is biased to an adventure bike , it will tour just fine but really cant compare to a V1 overall for pavement, the same is true the other way.
Simple really ...both great bikes ,but dissimilar in some important ways .

Main difference is how you like to ride a bike and how you are using the engine.

V-twin or a line 4, that is the question. The rest is pure esthetic. I don't like the look of the new V-Strom front face, To small, no protection, feels like you have nothing in front of you comppare to the older generations.

don't understimate heat and wind protection differences....

The versys has far more wind protection that the vstrom. Engine heat is similar, but the vstrom is able to flush away hot air more easily.

If you live in a hot place, go for the vstrom. If you ride mostly in colder and wetter conditions the versys is superior.

Given this going back I should have bought a vstrom 1000 instead of my versys 1000 in 2017, and now I have also trouble selling it.  :125: :125: :125:

So the vstrom has a vertically mounted rear suspension unit that is more likely to cause back pain :008: and a slipper clutch is an electronic device?? I'm not sure he really has the credentials to comment.

I didn't construct the comparison... only posted a link   :007:

there are other links on youTube which may be more accurate... I haven't had the time or the inclination to watch them   :008:
