News from my mechanic mate is my starter motor has fallen apart inside, looks like the glue holding it together has failed, maybe due to the heat?
Replacement starter motor on its way and fingers crossed.

I really hope that this now sorts out this strange problem

If you get chance to post some pictures of the collapsed starter motor then that would be interesting

It would be even more interesting to see some pictures of your trip, which I hope wasn't blighted too much by the mechanical issues that you suffered

So the replacement starter is on and seems to have done the trick. Here Is a photo of the old one. As you can see all but two of the large magnets have come away from the outer casing and one has shattered into pieces. Im amazed it started at all and got me home.
Getting out the two bolts that hold the starter to the crankcase is a real fiddle and the gap to take it out between the frame and engine is very, very tight but I got there in the end by trying it at different angles and a bit of gentle pressure.

While the job of a starter is making a strong, organized electromagnetic force in order to turn a shaft, the inside of that thing must have been an electromagnetic madhouse... All the electrons and field properties in there going  :goggle: :goggle: :goggle: :goggle: :goggle: :goggle:
