I like the look of my SW Motech guards, but after seeing some photos on here and elsewhere I realized that if I were to drop my Versys, the first thing to hit the ground would be the turn signals...worse yet, instead of snapping off they would punch right through an expensive piece of fairing.  That's no good!  What's the point of the guards if they don't protect the fairing pieces?  I set out to solve this problem.

First I thought of adding a Delrin frame slider to each side, but after ordering some and mocking them up it just looked goofy to me.  Simple, effective, but not good enough.  Then I had the bright idea to weld up a couple of threaded bungs to each engine guard so I could mount OEM Kawasaki frame sliders to the bars.  I found some on ebay for $40 (for each side).  I like the idea of using OEM parts in a non-OEM way, and I liked the broad shouldered look it would give the bike once mounted up.  The frame sliders sit just proud of the turn signals so it should protect the signals and fairings in the event of a low speed/no speed drop.

I got 4 threaded risers from Bung King and tack welded them in place.  Then I had a local shop finish weld them with a TIG machine.

After light clean up with a Dremel:

Few coats of spray paint:

and mounted!

Overall I'm happy.  The spray painted finish on the bars looks good from a distance but I may have them sand blasted & powdercoated next time I get motivated.  Thankfully the frame sliders cover most of the ugly.  Mission accomplished, I'd say!   Probably way too much effort and thought expended on this project, but I was on a mission to protect my fairings!  What do y'all think?

I took them out in the wind today, but thankfully didn’t “test” them out. It was a fantastic day for a ride here in Central Texas.

Thanks for the kind words, gents.

Just added some selective yellow lenses to my D4 lights, so naturally I had to take them for a test ride.  All checks out!
